What is the Do Not Call List?
U.S. “Do Not Call” list, officially the National Do Not Call Registry, is a federal registry managed by the Federal Trade Commission that allows consumers to opt out of most telemarketing calls. Consumers can add their phone numbers to the registry, and telemarketers are generally prohibited from calling those numbers.
Under U.S. law, a telemarketing call is generally any phone call or text message made to encourage the purchase, rental, or investment in goods or services.
Examples of telemarketing calls include:
- Sales calls for products or services
- Real estate lead generation calls
- “Free consultation” calls intended to sell something
- Marketing text messages
The definition is broad — even if the caller is not directly closing a sale on the call, it can still count as telemarketing if the purpose is to generate business.
How to determine whether a phone number is safe to call or text:
ReZEN makes it super easy to determine whether a number appears on the Do Not Call List (DNCL) from the Directory tool in just a few steps.
Step 1: Navigate to the Directory in the menu along the left side of reZEN. Then, click Check Number.
Step 2: Enter the number you are looking to call and click Check Number. One of two statuses will appear - if the status says Not on DNC List, you are good to go! This number is clear to call or text for telemarketing purposes.
If the status says Do Not Call, this number is on the DNCL and the consumer has chosen not to receive telemarketing calls. This number is not safe to call.
That's it! Now, you can confidently call or text knowing you are compliant with federal regulations.
Do Not Call List (DNCL) Search History
The DNCL Check tool in reZEN includes a search history where you can see previously searched numbers and their status. DNCL search status is valid for 31 days, so if you've searched a number less than 31 days ago, you may proceed based on your previous search.
If it has passed the "Valid Until" date, a new search is required to determine whether or not the number now appears on the DNCL.
